Racially Visible Action Committee

The Racially Visible Action Committee (RVAC) is made up of visible minority Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) members who have come together to focus on the elimination of racism and to ensure a system free from discrimination as well as one that is committed to fairness and mutual respect.

Background of RVAC

The RVAC began with an idea in November, 1989 in the National Capital Region and became a formal organization by February, 1990, conducting special events to raise awareness about racism. In 1991, a similar group was formed in Toronto and later, in Calgary

Participation

Participation in the RVAC is open to all visible minority members of the Public Service Alliance. The Committee meets on the third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at 233 Gilmour Street.

PSAC disappointed by ruling on Bill 21

The Quebec Superior Court has recently ruled on Bill 21, the Act respecting the laicity (secularism) of the State. Bill 21 bans public school teachers, judges, police officers and other public service workers from wearing religious symbols – like the hijab, kippah and turban – while at work. PSAC was an intervening party in this dispute, one of two unions to join the legal challenge.
PSAC-NCR statement on the verdict regarding the death of Abdirahman Abdi

PSAC Executive Vice-President for the National Capital Region, Alex Silas, and the PSAC-NCR Racially Visible Action Committee released the following statement in response to Ottawa Police Service Constable Daniel Montsion being found not guilty of manslaughter in the death of Abdirahman Abdi: “Four years ago, when Mr. Abdi needed support to help with his mental health challenges, he was instead met with violence – ultimately resulting in his death at the hands of a police officer.
RVAC calls on PSAC to stand in solidarity with the Black community to fight against structural racism

The NCR Racially Visible Action Committee is disappointed to learn that Mr. Amarkai Laryea stepped down from his management position as acting director of the representation and legal services branch, following concerns raised by PSAC leadership, regarding an article he wrote on microaggression he experienced, as a Black person, at the PSAC.

Statement on the Quebec City Mosque Shooting

(February 2017, Ottawa)—On behalf of the Public Service Alliance of Canada—National Capital Region, the Racially Visible Action Committee (RVAC), condemns this week’s vicious attack on the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City by Alexandre Bissonnette, a young and apparently right-wing extremist student studying at Laval University. The attack, which killed six people and injured 19 others, is a reminder that racism and, specifically, Islamophobia, are very much alive in Canada today.
